Description Black elderberry (Sambuccus nigra) - seeds Origin: Austria Harvest: 2025 Germination period: approx. 4-8 weeks Each pack contains approx. 5 dried fruits with seeds! Larger quantities on request! Sowing instructions Sambucus nigra is quite easy to grow from seed if you follow a few important steps. Black elderberry seeds require cold stratification in order to germinate. This means that you should store them in a cool place, such as a refrigerator or even outdoors, for around 2-3 months. Then plant the seeds in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Make sure to only lightly cover the seeds with soil and keep them evenly moist. Germination can take several weeks, so be patient! Harvest, use & storage The flowers of the black elderberry can be harvested in spring and used to make delicious elderflower syrups or teas. The dark purple berries follow in late summer and are ideal for juices, jams or elderberry wine. Be careful not to eat the berries until they have been cooked, as they are slightly poisonous when raw. After harvesting, you can freeze the berries or boil them down into juice, which can then be stored for a longer period of time. Tips & Tricks A tip: Sambucus nigra loves sunny to semi-shady locations and thrives best in humus-rich, well-moistened soil. Regular watering during dry periods promotes growth and ensures a bountiful harvest. You can also cut the plant back slightly in the fall to promote growth the following year. Worth knowing The black elderberry is not only a versatile useful plant, but also has a long tradition in naturopathy. Both the flowers and the berries are rich in vitamins, especially vitamin C, and have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Elderberry is also a real eye-catcher in many gardens!
