Originally native to Europe, it is considered a classic in cottage gardens and is now a highlight for romantic borders and naturalistic plantings. Its graceful growth and unusual flower shape make it a real eye-catcher. Sowing instructions Sowing time: February to April under glass or from May directly outdoors. Germination period: 3-6 weeks at temperatures of 15-18 °C. Seeding depth: Light germinators - press seeds only lightly, do not cover with soil. Substrate: Loose, humus-rich and nutrient-rich; avoid waterlogging. Location: Partly shady to sunny; in full sun only with sufficient moisture. Pouring: Keep evenly moist, but not too wet. Planting distance: 30-40 cm so that the perennials can develop their elegant shape. Note: columbines like to self-seed. If you want to create a specific bed design, you should cut back faded inflorescences in good time. Harvesting, use & storage It flowers from May to June and grows to a height of around 60-80 cm. The double flowers are ideal as cut flowers and last a long time in the vase. The "White Barlow" also looks impressive in the border, whether in herbaceous borders, natural gardens or in combination with delicate grasses. When storing seeds, it is advisable to collect them in midsummer and keep them dry, cool and protected from light. Tips & tricks for hobby gardeners Pruning: Cut back after flowering to control self-seeding and keep the plant compact. Winter protection: Normally hardy; protect lightly with leaves or brushwood in harsh locations. Combination: Goes perfectly with roses, peonies, lady's mantle or cranesbill. Rejuvenation: New sowing or planting every few years, as older plants are weaker in flowering. Care: Regularly remove withered stems to encourage re-flowering. Worth knowing ✨ The columbine belongs to the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) and has been part of European garden culture for centuries. In medieval monastery gardens, it was valued both for its delicate beauty and symbolically: the white columbine stands for purity, humility and spiritual clarity. Its star-shaped, double flowers are considered particularly noble and unique in the "White Barlow" variety. From an ecological point of view, the plant provides valuable nectar for bees, bumblebees and other pollinators. Thanks to its ability to self-seed, it contributes to a lively, dynamic garden design. In cultural history, columbine has also often been mentioned in paintings and literature - as a symbol of delicacy, transience, but also of hope. The "White Barlow" variety not only gives the garden a historical plant, but also a poetic accent in the sea of flowers.
