The seeds of Vaccinium corymbosumAmerican blueberry or cultivated blueberry, allow you to grow robust and high-yielding blueberry bushes yourself. These hardy plants delight with sweet, juicy berries and magnificent autumn colors. Sowing instructions Sowing blueberry seeds requires a little patience, but rewards you with healthy, strong plants: StratificationThe seeds require a cold period of 4-6 weeks. Mix them with moist sand and store them in the refrigerator (approx. 4 °C). SowingAfter cold treatment, you can sow the seeds in a seed tray with acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5). Cover them only lightly with substrate. GerminationKeep the soil constantly moist, but not wet. At temperatures of 18-22 °C germination takes place after 4-8 weeks. Pricking & transplantingAs soon as the seedlings are strong enough, you can separate them and later plant them outdoors. Harvest, use & storage You can expect the first fruits after about 3-4 years. They are harvested from July to September. The blue berries are rich in antioxidants and can be used in a variety of ways: Eaten fresh as a healthy snack In smoothies, muesli or yogurt For making jams, juices or desserts Dried as an ingredient for teas or baked goods To enjoy the harvest for longer, you can freeze the berries or process them into fruit powder. Tips and tricks Prefer blueberries acidic, well-drained soil. Use rhododendron soil or mix peat into the substrate. A sunny to semi-shady location promotes growth and fruiting. Water with low-lime water (e.g. rainwater) to keep the pH value of the soil stable. A light pruning in late winter promotes a rich harvest. Plant several plants for better pollination and higher yields. Worth knowing Vaccinium corymbosum originally comes from North America and was cultivated for horticulture. The plants are hardy down to -25 °C. Its white to pink flowers are a valuable source of food for bees. The bright red color of the leaves in autumn also makes the plant visually attractive. Blueberries contain valuable vitamins (A, C, E) and secondary plant substances that strengthen the immune system.
