Physalis peruviana - the exotic Andean berry ✨ The Physalis peruvianaalso known as the Cape gooseberry or Andean berry, is an exotic fruit plant with delicious, golden-yellow berries that ripen in a delicate, papery shell. Originally from South America, it has been delighting connoisseurs all over the world for centuries. Their sweet and sour taste is reminiscent of a mixture of pineapple, vanilla and citrus - perfect as a sweet treat, for desserts or as a decorative addition to exotic dishes. Thanks to its decorative lantern covers, it is also a real eye-catcher in the garden or on the balcony. Sowing instructions Sowing time: Grow indoors from February to April. Germination period: 7-20 days at 20-25 °C. Seeding depth: Cover with approx. 0.5 cm of soil. Substrate: Loose, nutrient-rich substrate or vegetable soil. Location: Sunny, warm and protected - ideal for containers, raised beds or greenhouses. Pouring: Keep evenly moist, avoid waterlogging. Planting distance: 40-60 cm, as the plants grow very bushy. Note: Physalis grows similarly to tomatoes - regular pruning and support promotes a rich harvest. Harvesting, use & storage The berries are ripe when the papery husks turn dry and beige. The golden-yellow fruits can be eaten straight from the plant, but also taste delicious in fruit salads, jams, chutneys or as a dessert decoration. Fresh physalis can be stored in a cool, dry place for several weeks - a clear advantage over many other berries. Tips & tricks for hobby gardeners Physalis can be cultivated like tomatoes - even in a pot on a balcony or terrace. Pruning in the fall and frost-free overwintering allow perennial cultivation. Late fall? Harvesting unripe fruit is possible - they ripen indoors. An absolute magnet for children, who can snack on the sweet fruit straight from the lantern. Worth knowing Physalis peruviana originally comes from the highlands of Peru, Chile and Colombia and has been cultivated there for centuries. Even the Incas appreciated the nutrient-rich berries, which are rich in vitamin C, provitamin A and antioxidants. In the 18th century, the plant arrived in South Africa, where it was given the name "Cape gooseberry", and from there it spread around the world. Today, it is a symbol of exotic indulgence and is not only eaten fresh, but also appreciated in gourmet cuisine - for example as a sophisticated accompaniment to cheese, chocolate or game dishes. Their decorative wrappers also make them a popular eye-catcher in the kitchen and garden. ✨ Free seeds with every order! ℹ️ Important note Despite careful checks (germination capacity, storage, freshness), we cannot guarantee germination - too many external factors play a role in cultivation.
