Passiflora mollissima, also known as banana passion fruit or curuba, is an exotic, fast-growing climbing plant with striking, pink to salmon-colored flowers and elongated, edible fruits. It originates from the Andean regions of South America and thrives particularly well in temperate to subtropical climates. This passion flower species is not only a beautiful ornamental plant, but also produces aromatic fruits that can be used raw or in juices and desserts. Sowing instructions The germination of Passiflora mollissima can take some time. Pre-treatment of the seeds improves the germination rate considerably. Harvest time: Late summer to fall Use: Consume fresh, for juices, smoothies, desserts or jams Storage: Can be kept at room temperature for a few days, in the fridge for up to two weeks The fruits have a sweet and sour aroma and are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Tips and tricks A climbing aid promotes growth and makes harvesting easier. Passiflora mollissima is sensitive to cold - in temperate climates it is advisable to grow it in containers and bring it indoors in winter. Regular pruning keeps the plant compact and promotes flower formation. Pollinators such as bees and butterflies love the flowers - manual pollination may be necessary for indoor cultivation.
